Fossil Treasure from Niagara Gorge

400-million-year-old brachiopods from Niagara Falls |
While hiking along the Niagara Gorge, I discovered something amazing—tiny fossilized shells hidden in a rock, later identified as brachiopods. These prehistoric creatures lived around 400 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs, when the area around Niagara Falls was a warm, shallow sea near the equator. Over millions of years, the region drifted to its current location in Canada and the USA, and erosion finally exposed these ancient fossils to daylight again.
The Niagara Gorge, a deep canyon carved by the powerful Niagara River, is a stunning place filled with lush vegetation and the swift, roaring waters of the Niagara River. These fossils remind us of the area's distant past and the incredible history of our planet.
