Reflecting on Niagara’s Past

This past Monday, September 30, marked the fourth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. While millions visit Niagara Falls each year to marvel at its beauty, it was the Indigenous peoples, who arrived nearly 13,000 years ago as the glaciers receded, that first experienced its raw power and witnessed the formation of the Niagara landscape we know today.
For as long as the Niagara River has flowed, people have lived along its shores. The land around us, including the Crown land where Niagara Parks is located, was shaped by treaties dating back to the early 1700s.
We are thankful for the privilege to live, work, and enjoy this land, and we are committed to fulfilling the promise of truth and reconciliation.
